Didn’t get into a residency program? Here’s why you should rejoice
It’s that time of the year again. A lot of foreign medical graduates, who aspire to settle in the United States, learn that they haven’t been matched to their applied residency programs. If you are one of them, you may be disheartened, frustrated or lost about what to do next. It has taken a lot for you to get till here, and now you didn’t get into a residency program – what do you do?
And so, we write this post to give you a fresh perspective and hopefully, a renewed motivation. We believe you can use this as a stepping stone to something better, something more lucrative and perhaps even more satisfying.
Here are three reasons why we believe you should rejoice that you aren’t in any residency program right now:
1. You have tons of alternate career options: There are many alternate career options, in which you can not only utilise your medical background, but also benefit from it. There are roles in research and data sciences, which promise high-growth, high-demand careers. Clinical Research, Clinical Data Science and Drug Safety and Pharmacovigilance – to name a few – offer you tremendous growth prospects and a great career progression. Did you know, for instance, that a drug safety physician’s salaries range from $95,000 to $205,000 per year, with average being $151,500?
2. You may get into the hottest jobs of the future: The future of medicine and healthcare is changing rapidly. Digital technologies are transforming pharmaceutical industry and how clinical research is traditionally done. By not having a traditional medicine career path, you gain the flexibility and promise of joining lucrative careers of the future. The global pharmaceutical industry is expected to grow at 4-7% compounded rate, with total spending on medicines projected to be $1.5trillion by 2021. The possibilities for growth are endless, if you get into any of the careers riding this boom.
3. You don’t need to invest a lot in further training: After spending years of investment of time and money into your medical degree, the last thing you want is to repeat that investment. The best reason to pursue alternate career options is that fortunately, most of those careers don’t need years of education or investment of time. In addition, the entry barriers are relatively lower for these careers too.
Once you decide on the career to pursue, you can start looking for eligibility to enter and qualifications and skills you’d need to grow. Most employers today are looking for relevant experience – not just theoretical knowledge. As a novice in a new career, how do you gain that?
