In our Student and Alumni Profile series, we will regularly feature students and alumni to give you a glimpse of who we are, and more importantly, offer you insights and perspectives if you plan to walk the same path. Meet Bhavesha Patel, a pharmacy technician who completed our Certificate in Advanced Clinical Research last year and is now working as a Clinical Research Associate with Avlogen pharmaceutical.
Please share a little about yourself
After completing my Bachelor in Pharmacy, I worked with a couple of retail pharmacies such as CVS Pharmacy, after which I was looking for a career change. The long hours and lack of growth were the main reasons to make the switch. I learned about clinical research and was interested to pursue career opportunities in this area as it would help me leverage my qualifications and background better. I registered for the Advanced Clinical Research program at Sollers College and completed it in April 2017.
What do you like about your experierence with Sollers?
I really like that I got a lot of support and useful advice from all teams at Sollers College, including the admissions, career services and faculty members. Not having a background in clinical research, I was mentored and guided in critical steps of seeking a job, like building a resume that accurately reflects the skills required by the industry today, and tips and advice for the various job interviews. All this gave a boost to my confidence level.
Did anything surprise you about your experience with Sollers?
I was quite surprised how willing and supportive the team at Sollers College is. I guess as a relatively small institution, it is trying to provide best experience to its students to ensure we are trained and equipped to get the right career opportunities. I also like the flexlble format of the training.
Are you able to apply anything from the training to your current job?
I am currently working as a Clinical Research Associate in Avlogen. I design and monitor Bioequivalence (BE) studies performed through literature search, product specific guidance documents, and applicable regulatory documents. As a pharmacy technician, I had no prior knowledge of ICH GCP guidelines, HIPAA and FDA regulations, all of which I could learn through the training; so that’s been very useful. Also, the Protocols, Informed Consent Forms (ICFs) and Case Report Forms (CRFs) that I worked on during my projects and internship at Sollers College have proved to be a good experience for my current role.
Do you have any advice / tips for prospective students?
Gaining knowledge and skills are important when pursuing any new career, but what is equally important is to acquire the confidence to get into and advance in these careers. I could’ve just done any clinical research certification, but I believe the overall support and guidance from everyone at Sollers College has really helped me gain the confidence to be able to appear in job interviews and talk about relevant functions in clinical research. I believe I got a lot more value from this training program. I highly recommend this institution and training to anyone considering it and happy to answer any questions you may have. Good luck!
